The clock is ticking for the whole world to mitigate the impact of global warming, including for the UK’s roads and public realm to hit net zero carbon. Although standards do already exist, something more directive – prescriptive even – is needed to move the dial on decarbonising our streetscape, with defined, measurable performance targets for projects. Engaging the public on firmer net zero targets, incorporating nature-based solutions into what the future looks like, protecting the earth’s natural resources, and improving air quality is also a must. We must act together to try new methods and make business as usual those which are proven to work, ensuring we bring communities on the journey with us in order to achieve our shared goals.

It is not too late, but with everyone acknowledging the challenges ahead, we need to work together to find and implement solutions.
