Commissioned by Transport for London and overseen by the major projects division at FM Conway, the scope of works included design changes to three junctions where Redcliffe Gardens meets Redcliffe Square, Tregunter Road, and Fawcett Street. Completed over 11 weeks, it aimed to enhance pedestrian safety and complement the reduced road speed limits. Air quality data collected during the project showed significant reductions in CO 2 and nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions versus traditional plant, aligning with World Health Organisation guidelines and London’s Clean Air Act. Originally planned as a four-week trial, its success led to an extension to 11 weeks on the Redcliffe Gardens project. “Bringing charge infrastructure to site instead of taking machinery away is a game changer and if we can do it in London – one of the world’s largest low emission zones – then in theory it can be done anywhere and scaled to bigger projects,” says Matt Tallon, sustainability director at FM Conway. “The trial proved the technical and commercial validation of the approach. It also showed the power of innovative collaboration when it comes to environmental responsibility. When we can work with clients and partners to think out of the box and see what’s possible, great results can follow.”
