Our association with racing tracks goes back a long way. We have done works at Buckmore Park and Brands Hatch over a number of years. Our largest single job was at Silverstone, in 2002, when we completed a £7 million contract in six months, building two new car parks and a new access road.

I wasn’t trying to impress him (although he was impressed); there were genuine work reasons behind it all. In addition to the rapid expansion of the Term Contracts that was now underway, we were taking on larger Spot Contracts, too. My father had looked after these (the ‘one-offs’) until his retirement in 1986, when Brian Morris joined and took over from him. One of the main differences between these contracts and the Term Contracts is that they are driven by the end dates, and usually have penalty clauses attached to them. Well, in 2002, Brian took on our largest and most prestigious Spot Contract to date, for the Brands Hatch Group at Silverstone, which explains why I was spending time there.
