Chapter 5 Finding a New Home

In 2003, I was able to acquire a company I had admired for a number of years. London Paving not only had a wonderful name, it also delivered a wonderful product: high-quality, specialised paving of all kinds.

Silverstone with the new foam-mix plant. He’d been sent up overnight so that the plant would be in place for the next morning’s work. Brian had given Des a crude map of Silverstone that he had drawn on a piece of A4 paper – not unlike a treasure map where X marks the spot. The map might have been sufficient in daylight hours, but it was no use at all in the dark. When Des got to Silverstone, he showed the map to the security guard, and all the guard replied was: ‘You must be joking.’ So, Des set out on foot into the night. It was only when he found himself at the bottom of a hole and up to his belly button in water that Des decided to use the back-up number that Roy had given him. ‘Danny Dargan will be able to help you out,’ Roy had told him. ‘He knows the place like the back of his hand.’ By now, it was half past one in the morning, and Danny was not happy to be woken. After a bit of swearing, Danny decided to be helpful. ‘There’s a heap of telegraph poles. Put it by the telegraph poles,’ he said. ‘And how exactly am I going to find the **** telegraph poles?’ Des asked him in desperation. In the end, he left the foam-mix plant by the main office, and kept the map as evidence to show me the next day, to demonstrate how cruelly he had been mistreated. I f things were busy up at Silverstone, they were getting even busier back at Rochester Way. In 2003, I was able to acquire a company I had admired for a number of years. The new product and skills that we gained with London Paving opened a few doors for us, helping us get the Term Contracts in Harrow and Hillingdon.
