With the use of GPS systems to track the vehicle movements, and with improved sensors on the booms, he was able not only to plot the location of each gulley, but also to provide the client with a history of the silt level inside it. Up until that point, the Councils had had only the vaguest idea of where the gullies were, and no knowledge at all of whether they were silted up or not. Now, we were able to offer or customers a programme of works based on measurable outcomes, and that brought in a lot of new work. In the six years that we had been at Rochester Way, the company had quadrupled in size, growing in all directions, offering a wider range of services to an ever-increasing number of customers. Partly, it was the result of having more space (and using it well) and of geographical location. Partly, it was due to the changes in the London Boroughs, which we were well positioned to take advantage of. And partly, it was due to our willingness to innovate and invest. Steve Hart, who came to us recently as our new Plant and Transport Director, worked for one of our competitors, T.E. Beach, at that time. He told me recently that as soon as Beach knew where we were moving, they knew that they were in trouble. And so it turned out. They were bought out by Ringway in
