Going the Extra Mile

It was my job, and the job of the Conway Board, to ensure the future of the company.

affecting his health – it had quite literally been making him ill – and he was no longer able to keep up with the pace. If he had been able, he would still be with us. He was one of the few really bright people I have known who was also able to make money. Luckily, he still does a bit of work for us on a freelance basis. The news of these departures shook the company, as I knew they would. People wondered, in particular, what Sean had done wrong. But they were missing the point. My decision had nothing to do with the past; it was all about the future. It was my job, and the job of the Conway Board, to ensure the future of the company. It was, and is, our job to put things in place so that they are ready when they are needed and not months or even years afterwards. The changes I was making to the Conway Board were all about building for the future. And there were many more things, and people, that needed to be put in place over the next few years. The first of these was, of course, a new Finance Director. By the end of 2007, I had a new person in place. David Donnelly was the right person to help me and the company look forward – in every sense of the word – to the big challenges that were just around the corner.
