The river had silted up since the old jetty was put in, and our new one would need to go further out into the river.

O ne of the important features of the Erith site was its Thames side location. The site had a jetty, but the jetty itself would need to be replaced. The river had silted up since the old jetty was put in, and our new one would need to go further out into the river. It would also need to be strong enough to support the weight of the crane that we would use on it. The cost of the new jetty alone, which we commissioned Nuttall’s to build for us, would be around £2 million. And the crane wouldn’t come cheap either. It was one of Steve Hart’s first jobs, when he joined us in 2010, to recommend a crane. John Sullivan preferred a rope-operated crane;
