Steve, who had no previous experience of cranes, felt drawn towards the newer hydraulic technology; the experts who advised us were split down the middle. The costs were pretty similar; the question that was puzzling us all was which type of crane was quicker. What Steve needed was to see lots of cranes in action. Technology, in the form of YouTube, came to his rescue. Apparently, crane drivers like to film themselves – they’re that kind of person – and there are at least a hundred films of cranes in action on YouTube. So, Steve spent hours on YouTube with his stopwatch, timing the movements of different types of crane (he’s that kind of person) before coming up with his recommendation.
