And when we built the new road, Boris Johnson performed the opening ceremony for us. There was another unusual thing about the Mulberry Way site. Our immediate neighbour was an established Gypsy encampment, and rumour had it that if you picked the right day, you could go and watch a bit of bare knuckle fighting. In order to get neighbourly relations off to a good start, we sent John Sullivan along to pay them a visit. He decided – very sensibly – to take his wife with him. When they arrived, the Gypsies got out their best china, and everyone sat down and had tea. And the relationship has turned out very well. We employed one of them as a Security Guard (it’s always good to use local talent wherever possible), and we’ve had no trouble on the site.
