FM Conway - Going the Extra Mile

Going the Extra Mile

of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) was to install HVM measures at all the Olympic Venues outside the Olympic Park, from Hampden Park in Glasgow down to the Athletes Village in Weymouth. This contract was worth over £20 million, and involved exceptional levels of planning and co-ordination across the 21 Olympic Venues and across the innumerable stakeholders (venue owners, managers, police, etc.) whose consent and approval were required. The HVM Contract was for Design and Build, allowing three months for Design and two months for Build, but of course it didn’t work out quite as simply as that. Brian sub-consulted the Design to TPS (part of Carillion), and he sub-contracted the Build to Barhale, who do a lot of works for the Water Authorities and therefore have depots all round the UK. The Project Director, whose job was to hold everything together, was Grant Lemon who worked miracles of co ordination out of our offices at Mulberry Way. For the Design stage, Brian and Grant had twenty-four designers from TPS working with John Holliday (who was then in charge of our Professional Services Division) and Mark Goudy, one of the Project Managers. Mark had recently joined us from Carillion, where he had been the client on the Cycle Superhighway project. But in spite of everyone’s best efforts, the Design stage overran: it was impossible to get everyone to agree. As the process dragged on into May, Brian had to force the issue. If he didn’t order the materials straight away, there

Hostile Vehicle Mitigation (HVM) measures at Earls Court and Old Trafford. We installed measures similar to these at all of the 21 Olympic Venues outside of The Olympic Park.
