I didn’t like hiring plant; if the work justified it, I preferred to buy what we needed. Investment would lead to growth – with more plant we would be able to take on more work. That was my philosophy right from the start; it worked then, and it still works now.

The Queen opened the renovated Town Hall Gardens in Croydon on June 21 st 1983, when they were renamed The Queen’s Gardens in honour of her visit. In the photograph, I am holding the Queen’s hand, and John Murtagh is standing on my right (with his tie tucked into his trousers).
