dug up the roads, took the stuff to Downs Road, crushed it up, took it back, and put it back in again. It was dead easy, it was quick, and it was cheap. All they wanted was a Type 4, nothing complicated about it. We were getting paid to take the stuff away and to bring it back again – and we were providing our own materials. We were saving money for ourselves and for our client, and we were cutting down on unnecessary waste by recycling the stuff. Why was no one else doing it? If there’s one thing that all contractors dream of having, it’s their own quarry. And here it was! We were walking on it, and driving on it, and yet none of us had realised its potential. The roads we were working on were our own virtual quarry; we simply had to learn how to make use of it. This was surely a business model with a big future.
