To my mind, the site was perfect: I could see where everything would go, and I could see how it was going to work. What Ron saw was quite different, and I quote: ‘I saw a mess. I saw mud. I saw unauthorised tenants. I saw a nightmare.’

93 An aerial view of the Rochester Way site in 2001, before the construction of the Recycling Plant. The Workshop (top left) and the offices (top centre) are in use. Beck & Pollitzer still occupy the green warehouse: you can see their red cranes in the yard outside – and even a tank left over from the War. While we were constructing our site, a housing estate was being built next door.
