FM Conway - Going the Extra Mile

First stages of construction work at Rochester Way, looking towards the Workshop from what are now our main offices.

had been with us for many years: John Dillane, a sub-contractor who had done a lot of work for Brian Morris in Civil Engineering, and his partner Padraig Murray; and the two Danny Dargans, father and son. All four of them were terrific workers. There was also a lot of stuff that we had to sort out in the offices. We needed a new telephone system, which Spencer Scott installed for us. And when Jacqui Boorman arrived as our new IT Manager, in June 2001, she took advantage of the new system to set up our first proper computer network. At that time, there were only two computers in the office, and only dial-up Internet access. Jacqui gradually set about the long task of migrating all our paper systems onto digital files. This was a vital and necessary process, even if it was somewhat painful for many of us. I personally had not yet discovered the Excel spreadsheet, which – although I do appreciate its many uses – is, in my view, never a good substitute for having the numbers in your head. But gradually we got everything sorted. And I wanted it done quickly, because I wanted to get that crusher.
