Great Leaders Programme - Aspiring Directors Application Summary

Daniel Thomas

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL I could say that every division requires improvement, but rather, I think every division can make improvements. The requirement is really one of continuous improvement, and that is often more difficult than one single thing. Interdivisional communication and a common goal is an area I would focus on as a starting point, as it has a greater potential to improve every division within FM Conway. I think that all too often there is ineffective communication surrounding company goals and the role each division plays in the company strategy. Presently, it appears to me, that sometimes a division’s own priorities get in the way or clash, with another division’s revenue generation, and/or effectiveness, negatively affecting the company as a whole. I would focus on identifying interdivisional goal clashes and formulating a practical directive that removes these barriers to effective internal communicating and ultimately ensuring that the common goal is achievable, with a net positive effect on the business. THREE PILLARS PROPOSAL I very much see that the support and production areas of FM Conway could benefit hugely from “Technology”. Specifically, by “Technology” in this instance I mean data. In departments such as Plant and Asphalt & Aggregates, the amount of data that could, or rather should, be collected and used is immense. Taking Plant specifically, there could be great efficiencies from fully understanding plant utilisation. Understanding the plant utilisation would mean a much more effective procurement and maintenance strategy could be employed. FM Conway has increased in operational size rapidly, and there will have been big changes in plant utilisation with that. Does FMC fully understand the miles that each item of plant had to travel? Data, such as miles travelled, could be utilised to develop satellite plant depots (utilising existing FMC owned properties) to improve the efficiency of plant allocation to the division using the plant, offering savings to both divisions and the business as a whole. Miles travelled would incidentally also touch on the carbon pillar, with a view to minimising the travelled miles of each item of plant, and therefore reducing the diesel used, and ultimately the carbon footprint.
