Explanation of the Newsletter
Our great people are the beating heart of the business. Your hard work and dedication to always making this business the best it can possibly be, has not gone unnoticed; this has been ever more evident during one of the most difficult periods in our company history as a result of the disruption caused by the pandemic; you are the reason that the future looks so bright for FM Conway. We wanted to find a way in which we could focus on celebrating the great work you do and so we have created ‘ Rewarding Great People ’, a bi-annual publication that spotlights individuals and initiatives that make up the rich tapestry of the Conway family life, and shouts about why you are such an asset to us. Rewarding Great People is not only the name of this publication, and the name of our recently launched employee benefit platform which we tell you more about here, but it also describes our ethos towards you as a colleague and illustrates how we are always looking for new ways to support our team. I hope you enjoy reading our first edition.

WENDY BATES INTRODUCTION
Here at FM Conway, a great work-life experience really matters to us; it is important that every voice is heard and that you feel valued. Our last employee engagement survey invited you to ‘Have Your Say’ and you highlighted three particular areas for us to focus on; these were Feedback and Recognition, Learning and Development, and Communication and Collaboration, which have been key projects for us over the past 18 months As a result, we have delivered a significant number of projects as part of our continuous improvement programme, such as the launch of our exciting new benefits platform which has already provided significant discounts, savings and cashback for every day purchases. We also now ensure that appraisals are available to everyone so each has a two-way dialogue with their manager to discuss their performance and development, and we are very proud of our Great Leaders programme that aims to develop future leaders and enhance our culture. Supporting all of these projects and initiatives is our increased frequency of communication so that all our people are aware of important updates about what is happening in our business. We hope that through this publication you enjoy learning about some of your colleagues, and some of the initiatives we have already delivered, or have coming up but, we always welcome new suggestions and feedback so we can continue to develop to meet your needs. We are very much looking forward to the next employee engagement, planned for November 2021 when you get another opportunity to ‘Have Your Say’ and make a positive difference to the working experience as part of the family.

COMPLIMENTS
Division: A&A
Location: Erith Asphalt Plant
Compliment From: Steve James, Transport Manager
Operative(s) Involved: Laura Wallis, Weighbridge Operator
Compliment Received:
“I just wanted to write to tell you what a credit Laura is to the business. Last night she identified that the special instructions we received from Toppesfield were inaccurate, called the Supervisor, had this confirmed and changed them before any lorries left the yard. Last week she also stepped in when we supplied to the emergency fire patch on the M2. On this occasion we had no special instructions, as the Supervisor was on site, he provided some directions which she used, added to the generic instructions we always receive and issued that to the drivers. “She is always very helpful and not afraid to go the extra mile in order to ensure jobs are completed. As stated, she is a real asset to the company and should we still be awarding employee of the quarter, she would be someone I would definitely recommend.”

MENTAL WELLBEING
With mental health having such high levels of incidents in the Construction industry We understand that mental wellbeing is about wellness rather than illness and is not merely the absence of a mental health condition. It can be used to describe how we feel, how well we are coping with daily life or what feels possible at the moment. COVID-19 has impacted us all and has highlighted that mental wellbeing can affect anyone at any time and our 10 year Mental Wellbeing Strategy, Healthier Together, has been created to provide all our people with the tools they need to take action.

EXCELLENCE The success of any business is a team effort - great leaders, leading great people towards a common cause.
GREAT LEADERS
in from future leaders within our business.
For those of you who identified a wish to develop or hone your leadership skills at your recent appraisal, now is the opportunity to speak to your manager about your aspirations and seek their support with your application. The deadline for applications for cohort one has now closed, however if you wish to enter the Great Leaders Programme you can find further details of when to apply, as well as details of what is available for each Great Leaders Programme pathway on the Conway Connect Learning & Development page, or by speaking to your Manager or HR Business Partner.
In the last employee engagement survey, you highlighted the fact that some of you would like the opportunity to increase your leadership skills and become the next generation of front runners; this ambition, combined with our plans to further support our existing leaders who have had to navigate a changing and challenging environment throughout the pandemic, has led to the launch of the FM Conway Great Leaders Programme which we have been inviting interested candidates to apply for. ONLINE APPRAISALS
Our last ‘ Have Your Say ’ employee survey revealed that you have an appetite for greater feedback, recognition, and two-way communication. Following the success of the revamped and relaunched appraisal process for office-based employees last year, and after gathering feedback and ideas from our operational teams, we are now launching a similar scheme developed specifically for our frontline colleagues. Between June and September, every site-based employee with over six months’ service will have the opportunity for dedicated one-on-one time with their supervisor. This opportunity will focus discussions on celebrating the great work being delivered, and the creation of a plan of action to support with any areas of skills or career development. Each employee’s self-development ’wants and needs‘ will be different, so this approach will allow us to develop clear and successful career pathways within the business to enable everyone to fulfil their full potential. The new process will use an online form that can be completed on a laptop, tablet, or smartphone (using a link on i-Mobile), so it couldn’t be easier! Information about our employees’ training needs and performance levels will be collected at the touch of a button and shared with our L&D and HR teams for action and recording. We aim to use the appraisal content to generate recognition for work well done, and to identify appropriate support for those who need it.

INTEGRITY
We are proud to be supporting the government’s ‘Kickstart Scheme’, which provides funding to employers to create six-month job placements for 16 to 24-year-olds who are claiming Universal Credit and are at risk of long-term unemployment. To support this great initiative, we set ourselves the goal of taking in 60 individuals to mark our 60th year and took on an initial cohort of 15 Kickstart placements across various divisions in the business from a variety of education and experience levels. A number of them have been with us for several months now, working in roles that we created specifically for them to provide them with training and experience, as well as offering them a valuable insight into the construction industry. In that time we have seen a huge benefit from the scheme and seen these young people grow and develop into assets for the company. We have been greatly impressed with their work attitude and their ability to embrace the new challenges that FM Conway has presented them with and this has led us to offer several of our Kickstarters full-time positions within the business.

INNOVATION
COVID-19 WEBSITE
During the COVID-19 pandemic we created a dedicated employee website to help us keep connected at a time when we all needed support with new challenges and disruptions affecting our way of life. It was created to not only support our colleagues who were away from the workplace, but all of colleagues across the business when we may have been feeling stretched and distant, in order to help raise our spirits and keep us all together as part of the FM Conway family. Our COVID-19 website provides a valuable source of information for all colleagues and offers a range of resources from business updates, to access to training and certificate information, to a number of useful links regarding mental health and financial wellbeing.
Whether it was providing you with fitness classes to stay active during lockdown, recipe ideas to keep those blues away, or colouring activities for the kids to help with home-schooling, we wanted to provide you with support across every avenue and all of this and more can still be found on our website. Our aim is to ensure that nobody feels isolated, so please remember to look out for each other, support your colleagues and don’t forget the great resources available to you as this website will remain active for as long as it is needed by our people.
You can visit our dedicated employee website here: www.fmconway-covid-19.co.uk

BIG IDEA
Big Idea is our innovative scheme that allows colleagues to submit their ideas about ways that FM Conway can improve. Ideas are welcome from anybody, and can be anything from ways to reduce cost, ways to innovate, or even ways in which we can provide a new service. Every suggestion is considered, and accepted ideas are rewarded with a certificate and a £25 tax-free payment, with the possibility of it rising to £5000 if the idea offers a measurable benefit to the business! To let us know about your Big Idea and make a positive difference, visit www.fmconway.co.uk/ bigidea or use the Big Idea tile on Conway Connect.

BIG TEN
The Big Ten in 10 is our revolutionary approach to ensuring that our people go home safe every day. We have identified the biggest operational safety risks that cause life-changing harm in our business, and through our Big Ten in 10 strategy we aim to eliminate these ten risks over the next 10-years. This is a unique approach, designed to be transformational for health and safety across all sectors. Our aim is to raise the benchmark and ensure that all people go home safe every day. We will do this by asking you just how we can improve and we will use your expert knowledge to implement new technologies and tools to raise health and safety. The Big Ten in 10 has already demonstrated a number of improvements, with particular focus on the Big Risks that deliver the most potential harm.
Building on current successes over the next decade, we will be introducing innovations designed to eliminate Big Risks that our employees face daily, actively searching and utilising the wealth of digital and technological advances available to us.

CONWAY AUTO RISK
It has long been accepted that the single most significant factor in road traffic safety is the driver. Numerous advances in vehicle and highway safety features have resulted in significant mitigation of the effects of poor Road Traffic Safety but these alone will not prevent death or serious injuries occurring against a backdrop of increasing vehicle, and driver numbers. Our Conway Auto Risk programme has been set up in accordance with the company vehicle standards group to be completed annually and the annual requirements will consist of completing your driver profiling and then completing the relevant e-modules which will be assigned to you based on your profiling results. We are now entering the second phase of our Conway Auto Risk (CARS) system, in which anyone who drives a vehicle for FM Conway, including company car drivers, will be required to complete this training.
