We understand the importance of sharing those stories that demonstrate our core values of Care, Innovation, Excellence and Integrity at FM Conway.

The Recognition section also highlights work milestones, as well as any other life-events you wish to share!

“I would like to thank the team working on London Road who helped me to find my way back to the M25 after I had been driving around for 90 minutes, panicking in a place I do not know at all, very confused and frightened. I cannot thank them enough for allowing me to follow them. I do not know what I would have done if they hadn’t helped me. They are wonderful ambassadors for your company. I cannot thank them enough for their kindness.”

“BRFM radio had people phoning in to say the works have been done brilliantly and the road surface is excellent. Well done to the team who got this done over the weekend, with minimal disruption.”

MY DREAM

CARE

Ramping Up Renovations to Transform Family Dreams, Drives and Lives Liz Smith, a Business Systems Analyst for Finance, applied to My Dream to ask for her shared driveway to be renovated as it was in poor condition. In the past 10 years Liz has been diagnosed with a rare muscle wasting disease which has meant that her mobility has deteriorated over time, making it difficult for her to navigate her driveway. Over the UK-wide lockdown to counter the COVID-19 pandemic, her condition worsened which meant that she required a walking stick to move around safely. “When we go out as a family with my husband and young daughter, I have an electric buggy for going out. It is much easier for me to be out for longer, otherwise I get too tired and can’t keep up,” said Liz.

Living on a main road in the village of Sundridge in Sevenoaks, Kent, Liz currently has a shared ramp driveway with five other houses that goes up to a garage area, which has degraded over time.

Therefore, Liz was in need of a solution, and that’s where My Dream was able to help.

“I used to be embarrassed about my disability, but I think it is important to share it. There will be people that have it and it’s important to be honest about it. It’s uncomfortable but it’s important to say that.

“It’s difficult and there’s people out there with similar stories that don’t realise that they can reach out for help.

“FM Conway were so supportive of everything. From the bottom of my heart thank you.”

If you would like to submit a request to My Dream, please complete the form found on the ‘My Dream’ tile on the intranet or, alternatively, email it to the Conway family directly using: mydream@fmconway.co.uk .

MATERNITY & PATERNITY PAY

EXCELLENCE

Recognising the Importance of Enhancing Maternity & Paternity Pay As a family business, we recognise the challenges of becoming a new parent and the increasing need to offer financial help to new and expectant parents and we are delighted to announce an update to our maternity and paternity policies to include an enhanced benefit. With the overwhelming pressure on all parents to provide physically, emotionally and financially in those first months of a child’s life, the following benefits will offer support when you need it most:

In order to qualify for both the Enhanced Maternity and Paternity Pay, you must have been working for FM Conway for at least two years by the qualifying week of Maternity Pay and have complied with the relevant notification requirements.

Payments will be paid at the following rates:

For those employees who are currently on maternity leave, you will receive a back to work bonus after six and 12-months continuous service from your date of return to work. The bonus amount paid will be based on the difference between the amount already paid between weeks 1 to 28 and 100% of the employee’s average earnings.

MENTAL HEALTH

It is important that we take those small moments away from work to look after our mental wellbeing, to connect with friends and family, and to continue the discussion around this crucial topic. Would you like to become a Mental Health First Aider? We are looking for individuals who would like to help support our 10-year mental wellbeing strategy, ‘Healthier Together’. The strategy is designed to be used by any person within FM Conway, providing us all with the tools to take action in the name of mental wellbeing. To date we have trained over 150 Mental Health First Aiders throughout the business and continue to increase this number each month. If you would like to become a Mental Health First Aider, or if you would like to know more about the support that is available, please visit the Mental Health tile on the intranet. If you require immediate help, please contact: mentalhealthfirstaiders@fmconway.co.uk .

Aspirations to be a Mental Health First Aider Earlier this year, we hosted our Mental Health Awareness Week which was filled with activities and sessions all designed to raise awareness around the important topic of mental health. The week held many fun virtual sessions, including book clubs, film clubs, bingo and quizzes, as well as important sessions, both virtual and face-to-face, centred around discussing mental health and bringing people together. However, what took the week by storm was the new Shoot the Hoop Challenge, in which we saw fantastic participation across our sites to find FM Conway’s top basketball star.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR PENSION

INFORMATION FOR FORTNIGHTLY PAID EMPLOYEES

INFORMATION FOR MONTHLY PAID EMPLOYEES

If you earn over £10,000 a year (£833 per month / £236 per fortnight), are aged 22 or over and under the state pension age, you will be automatically enrolled into a pension scheme after three-months of employment. We currently have two pension providers – Scottish Widows (for monthly paid employees) and The People’s Pension (for fortnightly paid employees). FM Conway administers your pension scheme as a Salary Exchange Scheme, meaning you benefit from Income Tax and National Insurance savings on the amount you contribute into your pension. The current minimum contributions are 8% (employees and employers combined contributions); you will find details of the company’s and your own contribution to your scheme on your benefits statement. Did you know your family can benefit from your pension if something was to happen to you? It is very important to nominate who will receive your pension in this event. You can find the beneficiary forms on the pension company website (see links below). You can opt-out of the scheme at any time and, if you need more information on your pensions or entitlements, you can talk to our Payroll Team.

INTEGRITY

Continuing Michael’s Legacy with The London Construction Academy Michael Conway had a passion for people and founded The London Construction Academy (LCA), which was established to help people in the community not in education, employment or training (NEETS) to develop the knowledge and skills required to enter the construction sector. The LCA is funded by the Worshipful Company of Paviors and, as a longstanding partner, FM Conway is delighted to announce that the Academy is ready for enrolment for its next FREE CSCS course , which will take place from the 18th - 29th July 2022 . This is a fantastic opportunity so, if you know of anybody who would be interested, they must submit an application form, along with a CV and ID, to register interest. A capped contribution of £90 towards travel expenses is issued on an oyster card after candidates have attended the first day of the course at the venue and met enrolment requirements. Application forms can be found on the Academy’s website and should be returned by email to info@thelca.org.uk .

RECRUITMENT BONUS

Don’t Forget We Offer a Recruitment Bonus

More great people are always needed so, if you know somebody looking for a new role, this could be the perfect opportunity to utilise FM Conway’s Employee Referral Scheme and earn yourself some extra cash simply by referring a friend or family member to the business! We often run offers where we double the payment for roles that are particularly hard to fill. For the next three months, we are currently doubling the payment for recruiting Drivers within our Transport and Water and Drainage Management divisions, Operatives within our Lighting division, and Masons and Pavers within our Term Maintenance division so, if you know anybody who is keen to join our family, get in touch!

BIG IDEA IS BACK!

The Big Idea scheme is back! Our innovative scheme is being reinvigorated to allow colleagues to submit their ideas for ways that FM Conway can improve. Ideas are welcome from anybody and can be anything, from ways to reduce cost, ways to innovate, or even ways in which we can provide a new service. Every suggestion is considered, and accepted ideas are rewarded with a certificate and a £25 tax-free payment, with the possibility of it rising to £5000 if the idea offers a measurable benefit to the business! To let us know about your Big Idea and make a positive difference, visit www.fmconway.co.uk/bigidea or use the Big Idea tile on Conway Connect.

BIG TEN IN 10 - IMPLEMENTING

INNOVATION

Focusing on the Traffic and Pedestrian Interface Big Risk, our Plant division has worked with Liebherr to implement safety features on our loading shovels. Each wheel loader features various intelligent safety solutions that move away from object detection and focus on human recognition systems that can operate in tight workspaces, such as: LOADING SHOVEL SAFETY FEATURES

SPRAY-BAR SYSTEM

With a focus on the ‘Working at Height’ Big Risk, our Transport division has come up with a solution for applying water to the tipper body of our asphalt lorries. The spray-bar system enables drivers to apply water to their tipper body directly from their cabs – something that, previously, would have had to be completed manually, involving climbing up onto the catwalk. By using water, rather than traditional releasing agents, it is also providing us with a more environmentally friendly solution. Once implemented across our fleet, as well as our subcontractor’s vehicles, we will remove 429,000 ‘Working at Height’ activities per year.

Active personnel detection at the rear

„ „ „

Adaptive working lighting

A roof camera system for 360 monitoring „ An integral tyre pressure monitoring system

Reversing manoeuvres are one of the biggest killers in the construction industry and, by implementing this technology, FM Conway can eliminate the potential risk of circa 3.2 million of these incidents each year.

19

BIG TEN IN 10 - LIFE-SAVING RULES

As part of the Big Ten in 10 strategy, our SHEQ division has created the ‘Life-Saving Rules’, which give simple behavioural guidance to Operatives, Supervisors, Managers and Directors to meet basic compliance requirements. By following the Life-Saving Rules for each risk, you can make a difference and help prevent the Ten Big Risks that cause life-changing harm. Each set of rules is specific to your division, as well as the three levels of seniority mentioned - it is important that you know yours to ensure that you are working safely.

We are delighted to announce that Callum Stevens, our first HGV Driver Trainee, has passed his HGV practical test and will now be the first of the trainees to complete all elements of his HGV Class 2 Driver Training as part of FM Conway’s sponsorship scheme. The scheme was put together to assist potential driver candidates through the HGV course via sponsorship in order to aid the nationwide driver shortage and, ultimately, to deliver a sustained future for the transport industry. Callum, who is the grandson of former Driver, Peter Seamen, was sponsored through his Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) through the Wallace School of Transport, and we are now excited to welcome him into his role as a night-time Asphalt Driver at Heathrow Asphalt Plant.

Sadly, Peter passed away last year. However, Callum has stated his desire to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps and progress within the business to earn his Class 1 license and become a Low Loader Driver like his grandfather before him. This is a great example of FM Conway’s drive to develop and promote growth, both within our business and the wider industry, and we are delighted to see the hard work of our Learning & Development and Transport teams coming to fruition.

Congratulations to Callum and welcome to the FM Conway family!

ALEX VINER Apprentice Ambassador Award

BEN NEWMARCH Academic Excellence Award

The Apprentice Ambassador Award is presented to those who always look to be a good representative of our core values both within and beyond the business. Working in the Internal Audit team requires Alex to be a role model for business improvement and he has begun leading audits in the short time he has been with us. His ability to remain focused, and yet pay attention to detail, has led to Alex highlighting errors that have led to business processes being strengthened, thus resulting in greater accuracy of reporting. As a result, Alex has become a trusted source of assurance, and he is now given responsibility for presenting his ideas and findings to senior management, with his clear and concise presentation a pleasure to see in a young person. In addition, Alex was recognised for his contribution in raising the profile of people with disabilities and specifically his work with TfL to increase disability awareness on our sites. Alex also makes a valuable contribution to the people forums to ensure all our people are given equal opportunities in the workplace. He is an example of someone who has been given an opportunity, taken on challenges outside his comfort zone, and really flourished in the work environment.

The Academic Excellence Award is given to those who consistently perform at a high level within both their studies and their work. Ben was selected as the winner for his excellent ability to pick up new skills and produce quality work with great attention to detail. Ben’s Consultancy Services team commented on how they find it hard to believe he has only been doing this for just over two years. Ben consistently achieves very high grades whilst studying for his Civil Engineering degree at London South Bank University and he balances all areas of his work and learning. Ben’s strong work ethic is a particular reason why he is held in such high regard. He is a great team member, selfless, punctual and professional, and readily helps anyone in the team and in the wider FM Conway family.

JOE BARBER The Gus Smith Award for Dedication and Loyalty The Gus Smith Award for Dedication and Loyalty is awarded to those who live and breathe FM Conway. From the first day Joe’s team met him, his aspirations and desire to consider Quantity Surveying as a career path were clear. He understood and had researched the requirements of the role and was excited to learn and develop his knowledge. From the outset, Joe understood and embodied the key values set out by FM Conway. Joe has developed to become an integral, if not critical, member of the team. The team have the highest admiration for the way that he has extracted every benefit from the opportunities provided to him and believe he has now set the standard for all future Structures apprentices. This is a testament to his ‘can-do’ approach, his willingness to support the team, and his overall positive attitude. There is every confidence that Joe will quickly excel in his chosen field and will be a valuable member of the Structures division in the future.

TOM GREEN Pride of Conway : Apprentice of the Year The Apprentice of the Year Award acknowledges the outstanding achievements of an apprentice who has successfully applied their learning in the workplace to advance themselves, FM Conway, and the community around them. Tom plays an important role within the Structures team and is always dedicated to any tasks he is given. He is intelligent, well informed, and an asset to the team around him. Tom is a fast learner and is the first to put his hand up to embrace challenges, which is vital working within the Structures division, and he often brings new and fresh perspectives to these challenges. Tom takes particular care to help new members of the team feel welcome and supported; both new apprentices and more senior members of the team. This year, Tom has succeeded in moving into other areas of the core division to great effect and continues to be a true rising talent. His team believe apprentices like Tom should be used as shining beacons of success in order to inspire our next generation of young talent. We should, as a business, be very proud to have someone like Tom, just as his team are very proud of him and what he has, and will, achieve in the future.

5 MINUTES WITH - OUR WATER AND DRAINAGE MANAGEMENT DIVISION

What would you say to other women thinking of working in construction/infrastructure? Jamie: Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! FM Conway is a great company to work for; they have put us all through so many training courses and they really invest in you. Aliyah: Don’t be put off by the stereotypes; we’re now outperforming some of the men in our division!

FM Conway is not just a family business, it’s a business of families! There are currently two mother/ daughter gangs working our of Water and Drainage Management’s Sittingbourne Depot. Jamie, Aliyah, Bunny and Morgan recently spent five minutes with us to discuss their roles. What does the job involve? Jamie: Our jobs differ from day to day, however our main deliverables are cleaning and unblocking gullies, jetting lines, cleaning pits, and importantly clearing floods across Kent. We’re based in the Sittingbourne Depot on Matts Hill Farm, Hartlip. We are split between nights and days. Aliyah and I are on nights, whilst Bunny and Morgan are on days. We love the flexibility of our working hours as we own horses which means we have the capacity to look after them during the day. How long have you been working for FM Conway? Who was there first – mother or daughter? Aliyah: My mum (Jamie) joined the business first, and then suggested to me that I should join her. I loved it so much that I introduced Morgan to come and work with us who then eventually got her mum (Bunny) in too.

Each time we introduced a new friend or family member, we were sure to take advantage of the employee referral scheme – which has been great! What’s it like working with your mother/daughter? Bunny: There were reservations with our managers at first about pairing a mother and daughter together, but we have proved that we are naturally a good team as we know each other so very well. Jamie and Aliyah: We have moved from one of the smaller gully trucks to driving the super combis, and the key to that is our established relationship. We already know each other’s strengths and we play on that. Is the job what you expected? Morgan: We would have never considered a career in construction, but I now love it. I previously worked in a warehouse where I would stand in the same place all day long which was extremely boring. This job is now something I love doing and each day is different. You are constantly on the move at different locations and meeting different people. Jamie: The job has enabled us to train as the division is not shy about putting you through qualifications, and Aliyah and Morgan are looking to undertake their HGV licences.
