JOANNE CONWAY FOREWORD
Introducing Issue 5 of your Rewarding Great People Publication
In particular, there are some great programmes that you may not realise you have access to, such as our Healthcare Cash Plan and the upcoming volunteering policy, which demonstrates our commitment as an inclusive employer. We will also be reflecting on what has been a busy but successful year, celebrating some of our fantastic people, and discussing some of the important moments that have impacted both our business and your working lives at FM Conway.
With 2023 coming to a close, it is a good time to reflect on what has been another great year for FM Conway. We have remained strong and agile, thanks to the strength of our business model and, importantly, the capability of our great people. That success allows us to give so much back to you, and that is what this publication is all about - to ensure that you are accessing all of the many benefits that are available to you. This edition brings with it a great focus on some new initiatives and benefits that are being rolled out across the business, as well as a teaser for others that are on the horizon.
I hope you enjoy reading this edition and thank you for your continued support over the past year.

We surveyed our portal users and discovered that it has helped 100% of you save money overall!
Whereas 29% use it for Christmas shopping and 17% use it for a family day out, family meal or holiday.

Don’t just take our word for it - hear from some of our happy savers:
“I’ve been able to give my daughter a reloadable card for Uni, which I can then top up monthly for her so I know she can afford food.”
“The reloadable cards are a great way of budgeting with the additional bonus of getting instant cashback.”
“Getting the cashback on the prepay card for the supermarket we use all the time makes sense, it’s like money for nothing. Save up the cashback all year and it helps with all the Christmas food and drink!”
“The competitions are always worth entering. I haven’t won anything yet, but to enter for free is good. The monthly Lotto is also a good idea - got to be in it to win it!”

HEALTHCARE CASH PLAN
Your health is so important to us, which is why we will shortly be introducing a healthcare cash plan benefit provided by Medicash, that you can opt into at a low monthly cost, from as little as £6.95. A healthcare cash plan is a type of health insurance policy that pays cash benefits to policyholders in return for a small monthly premium. The plan can be used to cover a range of essential healthcare expenses, such as dental treatment, dental check-ups, optical care, physiotherapy, and more. At different monthly premium amounts, the scheme can cover you, your partner, and up to four dependent children. Its tiered approach means you can select the most appropriate scheme for you. Medicash is coming soon and we will be sending you more details about this great benefit for you and your family in the new year.
6
PEACE OF MIND FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Remember, that as an employee, you are eligible for a life assurance lump sum that covers your family should the worst happen whilst you are employed. The purpose of life assurance is to make financial provision for an employee’s dependants should the employee pass away while in employment. Circumstances can also change suddenly, affecting both you and your family. Therefore, it is vital that you keep your beneficiary details up to date. To ensure your family is covered in any eventuality, or should your circumstances change, you can request an ‘Expression of Wish’ form to update your beneficiary details. Please contact HR@fmconway.co.uk for more information. Usually a one-off sum of money to a beneficiary, or beneficiaries, named by the employee.

During the past year, My Dream has received many applications, all from our Conway Family requiring advice or support, or identifying team members they believe require assistance in times of family crisis.
“I was so touched that FM Conway chose to provide this opportunity and was so grateful. It meant so much to myself and my brother and I am proud to work for a company that made this possible. “My brother was very emotional when I told him the good news, he couldn’t believe how kind, compassionate and thoughtful people could be in the worst times.
Louise Morley was one such colleague who reached out to My Dream:
“Thank you again for all the support and making this possible!”
“In January, my brother was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastic Colorectal Cancer at just 39. Unwell, self employed, unable to work, and with a young family, making memories suddenly became so important but financially very difficult,” said Louise. “Through My Dream, FM Conway made it possible for my whole family to go to Centre Parcs and enjoy a long weekend all together making memories.
Is there a dream or wish of yours that you need help to achieve, or do you need support with something for you and your family?
My Dream can help.

CARING FOR OUR COLLEAGUES
FACE
ARMS
The face may have dropped on one side, the person may not be able to smile, or their mouth or eye may have dropped
The person with suspected stroke may not be able to lift both arms and keep them there because of weakness or numbness in one arm
The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST:
Earlier this year, one of our colleagues, Geoff Bowler, sadly passed away after suffering from a serious medical issue. Geoff worked as part of the Highways Maintenance & Projects Framework team based at Beddington Lane. However, on 14th March, Geoff went home from work feeling unwell. The next day, he failed to attend work or notify anybody of his absence, which was very out of character for him. This led to Terry Knight, Geoff’s manager, raising this concern to the HR team before immediately going to his colleague’s home address. “He was normally very reliable, which was one of the many reasons I went looking for him, as I hadn’t heard from him the day before,” said Terry.
On arrival, Terry tried to call Geoff’s phone and could hear it ringing from inside the house.
Fearing for Geoff’s safety, Terry called the emergency services who sadly found Geoff unconscious, having suffered aspiration pneumonia and a subdural hematoma – a life-threating medical condition which can lead to a stroke if not treated in time. The paramedics were able to save Geoff’s life that day, however he sadly passed away just a few months later in July.
Geoff was a well-loved and caring colleague, who is missed by so many following this tragic loss.
Thanks to Terry’s actions, Geoff was given a fighting chance and was able to have a few more months of precious time with his family.

SPEECH
TIME
Their speech may be slurred or garbled, or the person may not be able to talk at all despite appearing to be awake; they may also have problems understanding what you’re saying to them
It’s time to dial 999 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms
This really epitomises that our colleagues are more than just the people we work with, they are our friends, our family, and we truly care and look out for one another. Thank you to Terry for his swift actions and for his incredible display of care and concern for his fellow colleagues.
“He was well liked by all the lads in the yard and had a relaxed and friendly manner about him. All the lads called him Uncle Geoff. He is missed greatly.” Terry Knight
And to Geoff, know you are loved and missed by everyone who knew you.
“Uncle Geoff will always be sorely missed by everyone who knew him at Beddington Lane. Such a kind, caring bloke who always looked out for his colleagues. I personally only got to know him for two short years unfortunately, but he made me laugh enough to last 20 years. He was absolutely hilarious and could always put a smile on everyone’s faces. It was a pleasure to know him. Cheers Geoff!” Tom McEllistrum

Gold
At FM Conway, we are proud to have been awarded ‘Gold’ accreditation in the annual employer audits of the 5% Club. THE GOLD STANDARD The 5% Club is a dynamic movement of employers committed to increasing the number, quality, and range of earn and learn opportunities across the UK, with FM Conway proudly joining its ranks earlier this year. The 5% Club aspires to achieve 5% of their workforce in earn and learn positions (including apprentices, sponsored students and graduates on formalised training schemes) within five years of joining.
2023/24
From 180 members, FM Conway is now one of 120 employers who met the Gold Standard, and we are proud to not only be a part of this collective, but to demonstrate our significant commitment to nurturing the careers of professionals across our industry. We will now be exploring our future plans to ensure we achieve Platinum and represent the very best of our industry!

VOLUNTEERING POLICY – COMING SOON!
As a family business, our values of Care, Innovation, Integrity, and Excellence underpin all that we do, and we are committed to making meaningful contributions to the communities where we work and live. We recognise the positive contribution that volunteering has and would like to support our employees to engage in volunteering schemes and opportunities, so we are working on introducing a volunteering policy. This gives employees the opportunity to get involved in any company sponsored volunteering programmes, or to make personal volunteering applications. We welcome suggestions from employees for volunteering projects with charities or other bodies where volunteer work is available. If you have any suggestions or wish to get involved in some volunteering opportunities, please contact HR@fmconway.co.uk .

CREATING AN INCLUSIVE WORKPLACE
FM Conway is committed to putting people first and establishing an environment that allows everyone to do their best, whilst also maintaining an inclusive organisational culture through our own workforce, clients, suppliers and the communities we serve. If you share our passion about equal opportunity within FM Conway and have a particular topic to discuss around equality, diversity & inclusion (EDI), then you may wish to join one of our EDI Forums to help us continue to make a difference. Our EDI forums were created to give employees and stakeholders an opportunity to contribute to developing our inclusive workplace and to discuss important societal issues around diversity. The forums are designed to provide a “safe space” environment, where ideas can be communicated and voices listened to freely, with the aim to inform, educate and engage across all levels of the business in order to drive positive change throughout and beyond.
This can include topics such as ethnic minority groups, those with disabilities, women, LGBTQIA+, generational differences, veterans, and much more. If you are interested in joining an existing forum, or starting one of your own, please contact our Head of EDI, Ella Cole: ella.cole@fmconway.co.uk
We will soon be relaunching our
Disability Forum and introducing a new Veterans/Service Leavers Forum:
Disability - Thursday 25th January Veterans/Service Leavers – 2024 (TBC)
These are open to everybody, so if you have any ideas for points of discussion, would like to share your experiences, or are simply interested in learning more, please contact: for Disability victoria.hillary@fmconway.co.uk and for Veterans michael.barrett@fmconway.co.uk

ENHANCING OUR INDUCTION PROCESS
Our Learning & Development team has been piloting a new-look induction
This provides them with a broad view of our business, as well as important training on our mandatory modules and health and safety practices. At the end of October, we saw the launch of the new physical inductions. Whereas, Driver assessments and inductions, and monthly inductions for corporate staff are due to start in the new year. Our new-look inductions are currently still in the trial period, but we are excited to see how they progress and look forward to sharing the results of our pilot with you soon!
process as part of our onboarding process for new colleagues. Developed in collaboration with representatives from across the business, this new process has been implemented to ensure we are delivering inductions that meet the differing needs of our colleagues. FREE WRITING ASSISTANCE!
Grammarly is an online grammar checking website that can scan essays, articles, and other documents to find mistakes in the text. The programme looks for grammar mistakes across grammar, punctuation, spelling, enhancement, style, sentence structure, and plagiarism. Grammarly goes beyond simply finding and correcting mistakes though, by providing error explanation with every mistake it finds. That way you not only learn what mistakes are being made but learn how to spot them for yourself in the future. It is a great learning tool for those who face difficulties with spelling or grammar because it helps reinforce the rules of grammar and improves writing abilities.
As part of our continued drive to attract, recruit and retain diverse talent, we concentrate on positive actions to remove barriers to working in the construction sector. One of these areas is recruiting and retaining people with disabilities, and we are continually making adjustments to ensure FM Conway continues to be an inclusive workplace. We have been reviewing online tools that support those with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and would like to promote Grammarly, which is an industry leading, AI-enabled service to help people communicate more effectively every day.
At FM Conway, we have a corporate license for Grammarly, so if you would like assistance accessing it, please contact HR@fmconway.co.uk .

HIGHWAYS
Great people are everywhere at FM Conway, but often our colleagues go above and beyond, not only in their professional role, but by doing something exceptional that has a lasting positive effect on someone’s life. Two members of our Water & Drainage Management team did just that earlier this summer, when Pawel Bryla and James Valsler tackled a car fire on the M25. A car belonging to a lady with two teenage daughters had caught fire at Junction 4, when Pawel and James pulled over to extinguish the fire before the fire brigade turned up.
Fortunately, the family were roadside at the time, and nobody was hurt, largely thanks to the courage and bravery shown from our two colleagues. A Kent Fire Brigade Fire Marshall approached Pawel and James afterwards and told them that he was very grateful that they had stopped and taken action. This was an incredible display of heroism in dangerous circumstances, and they have shown themselves to truly be a credit to our business.
