OUR PEOPLE ARE OUR GREATEST ASSET

ENHANCING COMMUNITIES DISABILITY AWARENESS WEEK

During the first week of December 2020, FM Conway held its first ever Disability Awareness Week online, which featured free informative lunch and learn events each day, designed to provide everyone with knowledge and resources related to disability awareness.

It proved a great success and we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who participated, as well as to our fantastic speakers for providing their time and experience on the subject.

The week included talks by Kent Supported Employment on how they worked in partnership with FM Conway on our journey to achieving Disability Confident Leader status, as well as on Deaf Awareness in the workplace. We also heard personal perspectives from David Sullivan on the importance of Heart Health and Paralympic gold medallist, Aaron Phipps, on overcoming adversity, both of which were incredibly enlightening. The week concluded with a presentation from Transport for London’s Michael Barratt MBE on the impact of construction sites on people with disabilities, thus ensuring we could take the learning into our day-to-day operations on sites across London.

PEOPLE FIRST People First is our commitment to always putting our people’s safety at the centre of our operations. Our people are our greatest asset and maintaining their safety, health and wellbeing is paramount. Our People First strategy creates an environment where people look out for their colleagues, clients and communities, and have the confidence to communicate when they see something that may cause harm. BIG TEN IN 10 The Big Ten in 10 is FM Conway’s 10-year strategy for eliminating the potential of the ten biggest operational risks that cause life-changing harm. Now in its second year, we continue to keep the business updated on the role of the Big Ten in 10 and of our continuing improvement in eliminating risk. We were delighted that our SHEQ Director, Andrew Cox, was invited by Highways Magazine to discuss our approach to establishing our Big Ten in 10 and how it is already having a positive effect.

We are determined that together we can all play our part in raising disability awareness!

“Disability Confident Leader status reflects the drive and commitment of a company to truly provide the opportunities required for people with disabilities. It is not achieved by many organisations and, having worked closely with FM Conway over the last three years, I can say they are truly deserving of this hard won accolade.” Mark Parrin - Employer Engagement Co-ordinator. SPEAK OUT

LIVING OUR VALUES

Our Speak Out app provides a safe and confidential method for employees, and those we do business with, to raise concerns or report suspected breaches of our standards and processes. Speak Out reports can be anything from theft, fraud, bribery, and drug abuse to health and safety issues and a person’s conduct or behaviour. The app allows 24/7 contact and a landline number is also provided for Speak Out. Every concern is investigated and documented.

As a family business, we are always eager to extend our support into the communities within which we work, and we are always delighted to hear about some of our great people going that extra mile outside of the workplace. Water and Drainage Management’s Amy Adam has been doing just that, volunteering as a COVID-19 Vaccination Steward around her local area for two days a month. As a Vaccination Steward, she assists with ensuring the smooth operation of the vaccination of roughly 800 people a day, whether by showing people where to go, signing people in or wiping down chairs. Amy has truly epitomised our company value of ‘Care’ and we are proud to have colleagues that are doing their bit to get the country moving again.

Speak Out is prominently displayed on notice boards and is regularly covered in our weekly business updates.
