BUILD BACK BETTER SUSTAINABILITY STRATEGY

MEDWAY HEALTH AND SAFETY KITS

As part of the Rochester Bridge Refurbishment Project, FM Conway has donated 10 first aid kits to the Medway Street Pastors to assist them with their work to make Rochester a safer place at weekends. The Medway Street Pastors is a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable people through first aid, offering a sympathetic ear and even assisting people in getting home safely, as well as providing food and drink to the homeless people in the area. The charity operates primarily through volunteers who patrol areas of Rochester on a Saturday night and Sunday morning helping people in need, so it is great to see FM Conway being able to offer some assistance in whatever way we can.

FM Conway’s Sustainability Strategy is based on joining up the excellent work taking place throughout the company, focusing on key elements and setting targets for progress over a four-year period. It is framed around three areas:

PLANET

Environmental concerns are at an all-time high, and a key element of any sustainability strategy is a company’s impact on the environment. FM Conway’s track record on research and development and its commitment to resource efficiency and carbon management provides a solid foundation for setting challenging future targets. Companies with the greatest clarity of what their purpose is, what they provide their customers and their people, and how their activities impact the environment and society around them, have the best foundation for a sustainable future. This is where we feel the company is, and where we want it to stay. Family-run and retaining a family ethos, FM Conway places great emphasis on the safety, health and wellbeing of our people, the opportunity for development and progression, and the provision of a workplace which is friendly, inclusive and values the contribution of all members; FM Conway further extends this ethos to the communities in which it operates.

PEOPLE

BEATING THE SUNDAY BLUES

During the pandemic, our resourceful Mental Health First Aiders came together to host a series of events under the banner ‘Not Another Sunday Afternoon (NASA)’, an initiative aimed at helping us to beat the Sunday blues whilst in lockdown. Hosting a virtual social gathering from 2pm – 3.30pm every other Sunday, including a range of activities, such as quizzes, bingo, craft events, guest speakers and a ‘coffee break’ between colleagues, our Mental Health First Aiders looked to inject a little fun and camaraderie for any of our staff, and their family and friends, finding long weekends a bit of a challenge.

NATURAL CAPITAL

Natural capital is the Earth’s own resources, including stock of naturally occurring materials and organisms. We use the natural capital when we use nutrients from the ground to grow plants, the air we breathe, soils, aggregates, fossil fuels, and water that we use in our daily lives.

At FM Conway, we have seen the value in the ability to recycle and keep the materials from construction within that sphere of construction, reusing millions of tonnes of recycled material over the last six years.

That means we have avoided bringing virgin quarried materials into the built environment and additional carbon into that cycle.

We have tried hard to accomplish a Circular Economy, but we’re not finished yet and have lots more work to do.
