and will get better, and the business will be better for having her, and that makes me very proud. Daniel, my youngest son, is showing great potential and will be making a career with the business. My hopes are that he also becomes a director. My eldest son, Michael, has a career in motor racing and lives in the US. It does not look like he will be joining the company. He has had a very successful career to date, but unfortunately had a horrific accident at Indianapolis in 2010 that nearly cost him his life. His fight back to full fitness has been outstanding and has been an inspiration to the family, and to me in particular. ‘We can do it’ – I think that is a Conway trait. When you know what to do, just get on and do it! Get some good advice along the way; but you know when it feels right. There have been many things that have gone my way and few that have not, and for that I am eternally grateful. It has saved a lot of time, but there is much more to come in this company’s history. The foundation stones were laid on bedrock some time ago; my father arranged that. All I have done is build upon it. Now it is up to all at Conway’s to work hard and enjoy the journey ahead – because believe me, we have only just started.

was comfortable and didn’t want the stress of it any more. He left because he was satisfied with what he had and didn’t need any more to fill his life. My mother was happy because my father was happy and together they made a perfect couple. He went out and worked hard and put food on the table and Mum was always at home. I remember no matter what time Dad came home from a night at the pub she would be there for him with a cup of tea and a ham sandwich. The other person is my wife Kim. Although she would complain if I wasn’t around to help with the children, she didn’t put me under pressure, she got on with what she had to do. If I couldn’t spare the time to go on holiday, she would make her own arrangements, and take my mother-in-law Edna and the children to Butlins for the week and not complain. This made it so easy to make the right decisions at work because I didn’t have to worry about balancing my time at home. To this day, she is still the same. I am better now at holidays, however, and lead a much more balanced lifestyle. The only complaint is that if I come home from a late night out, there is no cup of tea or a ham sandwich! My daughter, Joanne, has come into the business and grasped it with both hands and shows the passion that I also feel. Being a director has its cross to bear and I will help and advise her as the years roll by. She is very good
