LIZ GARVEY FOREWORD
Welcome to Issue 4 of Rewarding Great People! Our publication designed to keep you updated on all of our great initiatives, benefits and success stories from across FM Conway. This edition follows our employee engagement survey, ‘Have Your Say’, which we want to thank you for taking part in. It’s critical for the business to understand what matters to you and how we can deliver changes that will benefit you most. We are currently working through your responses, and have already started using your feedback to put some new initiatives in motion. One of these is our new Employee Engagement Group, which is featured in this publication, and is all about creating a platform for you to represent your team and work together to create change within the business.
In this publication you will also find updates on some of our existing initiatives such as the Big Idea, as well as an introduction to some new ones that you may be interested in. We also hear from some of our great people as they share their personal stories on important topics, such as mental health. This is just a snapshot of the content on offer, but I want to reiterate that this is a publication for you. We are a business that is passionate about its people, and we are continually exploring new opportunities for you to ensure that we are an inclusive workplace that allows you to be your very best.

TIME TO TALK Workshop Service Manager, Rob Valintine, is determined to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental and physical illness, and he believes that we need to speak up in order to eliminate this issue facing the construction industry. “I was diagnosed with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) in 2019. I had stomach cramps constantly, all my joints ached, and I was having to use the toilet what felt like constantly. This meant I was struggling with lack of sleep and my weight was all over the place. I found I did not want to eat as I knew it would have an impact on my day-to-day activities.
everyone, including my family. The first four months I had the symptoms, I felt so isolated and so alone, I didn’t know which way to turn. I was struggling with a physical health issue which ultimately affected my mental health. “My wife, Vicky, knew something was wrong. She could see me changing every day and I was not aware of this. I finally broke down and told her everything.
“I was put on medication which helped suppress my symptoms to the point I felt I was back to my normal life again, but it was short lived. In 2021, I had a flare-up; all the symptoms were back, but this time it felt 100 times worse. This carried on into 2022 when I was admitted to hospital. “The decision was made for me to have surgery to remove my large bowel as it was full of ulcers, something I never wanted to happen, but it had to happen. I had life changing surgery and now have a stoma. This was a massive shock to the system - this thing had saved my life, but I hated it. “At the time I felt like I could not talk about my emotions – ‘That’s not what men did’. I took the typical male stance on this and hid it from

You are not alone, and you will be surprised at how much help and support is out there.”
year after my surgery. I find I still have bad days, but I can phone these guys and they are there for me, and it’s great knowing we have that kind of daily support in our business. “I know I am not the only one dealing with this disease. Recently, another member of our team, Tony Taylor, was diagnosed with IBD and due to my having opened to the Plant & Workshop team, he was able to do the same. “We now talk to each other weekly regarding our illness, and when we are having our down days, we reach out and spare the time to have a chat or vent. “I have found the more I have talked about it the easier it has been to deal with. My family, friends and work colleagues have given, and are
“Vicky told me I had to speak to my management team and let them know what was going on, and with that Michael Conway MBE was informed by our Head of Department, Paul Cerexhe. “Michael reached out and came to see me to let me know I was not alone, and that the business would be there for me whatever the results were. I was blown away by this and the support was there from day one, and it still is, with Daniel Conway and Mark Sydenham who are there should I need them. “FM Conway is constantly promoting support through the Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) and Employee Assistance Programme.
“I reached out to a couple of the MHFA, and I still talk to them now, a

At FM Conway we are always on the lookout for the next generation of talent, and we offer many programmes designed to recruit and nurture young people looking for a career within the construction industry. If there is a member of your family or a friend who is about to go to university to study a construction or commercial related course, or perhaps has a qualification in civil engineering, technology, sustainability, or asphalt and materials, then our Inspire Programme can offer: • A contribution to their study expenses • A mentor from the business to support their studies – and particularly their application to the working environment • Guaranteed paid work experience (of up to eight weeks) during the university summer vacation (following years one and two of study) • Practical support with project work if required

A GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE Earlier this year, we celebrated National Apprenticeship Week 2023 as part of our ongoing enrichment programme that develops and celebrates the apprentices that make up our great people.
It was great to see the future faces of our business as they were treated to various team-building activities and workshops, enabling them to build relationships and work together. One of these workshops was a Personal Brand workshop to align with the theme from National Apprenticeship Week. Apprentices were encouraged to think about how they want to be viewed in the workplace and how they can manage perceptions of others, so that they’re always bringing the best version of themselves to work. The day was a huge success and we would like to thank everyone who helped put our apprenticeship week together; it was a fantastic event and your hard work was greatly appreciated!
Apprenticeships are vital in helping individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career, and we recognise the important role that we have to play as a business in shaping not only their futures, but also our industry. In particular, we were delighted to welcome our apprentices from all over the business to Conway House for an enrichment day in February.

HAVE YOUR SAY RESULTS
INTEGRITY
During April and May this year, we invited everyone to have their say and share their thoughts and feelings about working at FM Conway and creating a great place to be. So many of you (just over 1,000 people) took the time to give us some feedback and we were delighted to see that our overall Engagement Index (which is an indicator of peoples’ commitment and loyalty to the business) has increased to 69%. Your responses help identify areas where progress is needed and with our Employee Groups we are committed to taking action to improve on these and make FM Conway a great place to work. We are sharing our top five indicators, our biggest moving indicators – since our last survey in 2019, and finally our bottom five indicators. It is these indicators that will be the initial focus of the Employee Engagement Group to help make improvements.

BIG IDEA: REWARDING OUR FAMILY ETHOS
INNOVATION
Earlier this year, the Big Idea returned, as we re-launched the scheme with a new and improved process to make the Big Idea even bigger! The Big Idea scheme is a platform where you can share any idea or innovation that you think will make a significant difference to our business, which rewards you for introducing a positive change to FM Conway. If your idea is submitted for consideration to our panel, you will be rewarded with a certificate and a £25 tax-free payment, with the chance of more cash rewards at every stage of the process, including the possibility of this reward rising to £5,000 if it offers a measurable benefit to the business.
Since re-launching in January, we have already had 40 Big Ideas submitted and we are now excited to share that six of those have been rewarded! It is great to see so many Big Ideas coming in, and in response to your submissions we have now added a new category titled ‘Family’. We recognised that we were receiving so many great ideas that focused on our family ethos and wanted to ensure that these were rewarded in the same way.
To let us know about your Big Idea and to make a positive difference, visit:
www.fmconway.co.uk/bigidea or use the Big Idea tile on Conway Connect.

COMING SOON - THE SUSTAINABILITY FUND
The Sustainability Fund is a new incentive to help fund and support sustainable innovation within our business.
The concept is to share your ideas on solutions that you have identified within the business to help promote sustainability.
Ideas can be anything related to reducing fuel or energy consumption (in vehicles, plant or facilities), reducing or reusing waste, removing single-use plastics, reducing water consumption or promoting the re-use of water, promoting biodiversity or promoting the use of more sustainable products – plus any other ideas you may have.
Your submission will then be assessed by the Sustainability Fund panel.
If your idea proves successful, your contribution will be recognised by the business, and you could be rewarded with a tax-free payment up to the value of £1,000.
The Sustainability Fund will be officially launching later this year!
Keep an eye out for futher updates with information on how to put forward your ideas to the Sustainability Fund.

GREAT PEOPLE DOING TRULY GREAT WORK
Help is available: Speak with the Samaritans today, who are available 24/7 on: 116 123 or SMS: Text SHOUT to 85258
Many of our colleagues are faced with difficult scenarios whilst at work. One of those can be discovering a member of the public who is in trouble and sometimes even looking to take their own life.
As Joe went to return to his car to put his hazard lights on, the girl then jumped up and started to climb the bridge railings. However, she was swiftly stopped by Adam and Joe, who ran back, pulled her away and sat her down on the floor. They then stayed with her to calm her down and reassure her, whilst they waited for polic to arrive.
Meanwhile, Slawomir and Steve were further along the road, calling the police to find out where they were.
Earlier this year, members of our Water & Drainage Management team were faced with such a scenario.
This incredible act of care and bravery helped to save the girl’s life that day, and we would like to recognise these colleagues for their admirable actions in the face of adversity. Working in the construction industry, this is something our teams see more often than the ‘average’ person, and we are proud to have colleagues who truly represent our ethos of great people : great work.
In February, in the early hours of the morning, Adam Beggs, Joe Mulvey, Slawomir Dominik and Steve Wickham were crossing a bridge over the A27, when they drove past a girl looking very distressed. Noticing she was upset, the team pulled over and went to speak with her, to check if she was ok. Adam and Joe stayed and talked with her, whilst Slawomir and Steve quietly phoned the police.
