Great Leaders Programme - Aspiring Directors Application Summary

Julian Wynn

BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT PROPOSAL Funding for Innovation and Developments - in my opinion I feel we do not take advantage of external funding pots for innovation, development and collaboration. Examples of external funding pots could be from, Adept Funding, Live Labs, DTI, Highways England Innovation, R&D refunds and this is only a few we could explore. I have seen our competitors take full advantage of this and benefit financially. As well as financially they position as a leader in their sector and are often considered first for projects and score highly in tenders. This aligns with social value, training and recruitments benefits. I believe as an organisation a funding development manager could be a great asset. The salary for this role would self-fund and could be supported by the Central Services team already in situ. The core responsibility for the role would be researching and applying for funds, working closely with all Divisional and Managing Directors. THREE PILLARS PROPOSAL The focus for development that I have chosen within the business is Carbon and Environment. However, I feel my response impacts all Three Pillars. The objective is to cut Carbon Footprint through better programming and optimising cyclic working routes. This will be done in such a way that all planned routes will cut down on travel, to aid this we will use data from previous routing and driver routines. To assist the designing of programmed routes we will use map16 to support this process and record and measure improvements. Machine learning could also become part of this new approach and introducing low carbon vehicles, IoT in phases and eventually predictive asset behaviour to further reduce attention/maintenance to assets. This could be applied to any cyclic operations within Term, Lighting, Drainage and other areas of maintenance and logistics throughout FM Conway.

APPLICATION SUMMARY

Wendy: Good application. Proposals would suit WDM but not the wider business. Nicely presented.

Sam: Good solid application.

Sue: Late application. Would benefit from the programme working with peer group. Application good, nicely presented.

Decision: Shortlist

Benefits:

• Reduce costs • Helps achieve Carbon reduction goals • Strengthen self-delivery focus • Client satisfaction • Sets us apart • Shows long-term ambitions

Working as a joint incentive by the Business Transformation team, operational representatives from divisions that carry out cyclic works, the sustainability SHEQ team and lead by myself, rollout would begin with a design programme for the start of 01/04/2022. We would then carry out a three-month trial starting 01/08/2021, allowing time to review results, measure benefits throughout programmes and design improvements for 2023.
