FOREWORD

At FM Conway, we recognise that the positive environmental and social impacts are as much a part of the fabric of our business as the maintenance and improvement of our road infrastructure, the built environment, and the public realm. Our approach to the environmental and social challenges we face is not an added part of what we do, it is integral to our business. Industry leading recycling and innovation in low carbon products and services, not only help our customers to meet their challenging targets, but also helps our business to grow, and as a growing business we can do so much more. Local recruitment and local suppliers help to support the wealth creation and resilience of our local communities, as does the charitable work of The Conway Charitable Foundation and the time we spend working with local schools and colleges. Our apprenticeship scheme helps local people aspire to careers in the construction and infrastructure industries. These are important industries, which are at the centre of the climate change challenge and provide a significant proportion of the country’s employment. Industries where people can make a real difference. We want to provide a safe, fair and inclusive workplace for all our employees. We are a family business with family values, and the health and wellbeing of all our people is at the heart of our operations. We are delighted that out safety programme ‘Big Ten in 10’, and our Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) strategy, ‘All Great People’ are both award winning, but more importantly that they create a working environment and culture that we can all be proud of. Our Social Value Report outlines some of our key contributions and the social value that they generate. We hope you enjoy the report.

GREAT PEOPLE

ACHIEVEMENTS • Disability Confident Status Renewed • Collaborative Female Recruitment • Armed Forces Veteran Recruitment

Social value is created by ‘what changes’ in people’s lives. Our support for our great people continues to focus on the employment of local people, our apprenticeship programme, and the training, development, health and wellbeing of everyone who works for us. Additionally, the time our people spend supporting schools and colleges, helping inspire local people, is also accounted for in the social value we create as an employer.

Receiving two awards for ‘Inclusive Employer’ from the Better Society Awards in 2021, and for ‘Excellence in Delivering Equality, Diversity & Inclusion’ from National Highways in 2022, has been a great reflection of the work and commitment of our people in increasing the diversity within our organisation. We were proud to have our Disability Confident Leadership status renewed in March 2023, after the successful submission of data and evidence to demonstrate the huge effort to increase employment opportunities for people with disabilities within our teams. In collaboration with our client, TfL, we participated in the Women in Transport and Engineering work place programme, successfully hosting six candidates for two weeks, and offering two candidates permanent positions, which they accepted. Our interim Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Strategy report was published in 2022, with over 57% of actions completed, and the rest in progress or planned. EQUALITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION

WELLBEING

Our apprentice programme provides opportunities for people to join our business and earn whilst they learn in a diverse range of occupations, from highways maintenance operatives to people studying for civil engineering degree apprenticeships. We are delighted to support people entering a career in the construction sector, and particularly with FM Conway. Our business recognises that by promoting apprenticeship opportunities we are addressing the skills shortages in our sector, as well as attracting diverse talent from our local communities, increasing wealth and prosperity for everyone. We have a programme of careers days, placements and recruitment events throughout the year, where people can find out about the opportunities we have to offer. Alternatively, they can contact us at: talent@fmconway.co.uk . CREATING LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES

To deliver on this commitment we have a number of strategies and policies in place such as ‘Healthier Together’ our Health and Wellbeing Strategy, and ‘Big Ten in 10’ , our Health and Safety Strategy. COMMUNITIES

DONATION • Royal British Legion Industries - £50,000 • Code Blue CPR - £40,000 • Honeypot Childrens Charity - £35,000

At FM Conway, we see our communities as an extension of our business. We recruit our great people from our communities; where we live, where our children go to school, and where we socialise. Our communities have faced significant challenges over the last few years and we will continue to support them in every way we can.

CODE BLUE CPR

FM Conway has donated £40,000 to Code Blue CPR, an organisation which provides defibrillators, and the related training, into the community. Defibrillators are seven times more likely to be used than a fire extinguisher, therefore placing them in easy access locations in the community can go a long way to improving the survival chances of those suffering a cardiac arrest. We are working with Code Blue CPR to place the defibrillators in local communities where public access to them is currently limited, and we are delighted that via our partnership, 400 people will receive training on their use.

“I have had a long-standing relationship with FM Conway, their commitment to heart health is exceptional.”

CHARITABLE DONATIONS £1,225,002 in Social Value

FM Conway has donated £1,367,000 to The Conway Charitable Foundation since it was founded in 2013

STREET SOCCER

Street Soccer is a UK wide programme, bringing the power of football into communities to inspire and encourage vulnerable and disadvantaged children and young people to turn their lives around for the better. FM Conway has supported this initiative since its first ever programme in Maidstone, Kent, and we are proud to continue to support the great work of the charity and to see it flourish.

“It was fantastic that FM Conway believed in this programme from the start, it is fair to say that without their funding, our nationwide programme may never have got off the ground.”

Keith Mabbutt CEO, Street Soccer

FM Conway has a long track record of environmental excellence, allowing us to offer world class solutions to our customers. We are targeting Net Zero carbon five years ahead of the government’s target of 2050, and our carbon reduction and recycling both create significant social value. ENVIRONMENT

ACHIEVEMENTS • Comprehensive Roadmap to Net Zero • A range of high recycled content asphalt products • Over 15,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle waste recycled at our Drainage Water Treatment Plant

SUSTAINABILITY STATEMENT

We recently reviewed and updated our approach to sustainability to better reflect the excellent work being delivered across our business and our renewed focus on delivering a greener future. Our improved Sustainability Statement focuses on six key areas: • Our roadmap to Net-Zero Carbon by 2045 • Being resource efficient and enhancing natural capital • Responsible recycling and the circular economy • Producing a greener product portfolio and championing a low carbon economy • Investing in our communities • Putting our People First Our Drainage Treatment Plant, built almost 20 years ago, is an excellent example of the circular economy. The facility allows us to divert hard-to-recycle gully waste from landfill, and provides us with stone, sand and gravel for use as recycled material in our aggregates division. Additionally, the water recovered is cleaned and used in our aggregate washing plant, providing a virtuous circle of recovering solid constituents from the gully waste and using the water to wash the recycled aggregates for use in high value applications. SUPPLY CHAIN

ACHIEVEMENTS • New supply chain portal • Comprehensive radius reporting to record locality to site • Support for small to medium enterprises

We are proud of our partnership with local suppliers. Working in collaboration, sharing best practice, and developing relationships to encourage innovative, sustainable solutions are integral for both our business and the industry. Using local suppliers helps to create employment opportunities, wealth, and prosperity in our communities, contributing to resilience during challenging economic times. And by understanding the make-up of our supply chain better, we hope to unlock greater efficiencies and achieve the best possible outcome for our customers and our communities.

WORKING IN PARTNERSHIP FOR 20 YEARS!

Proctors started working with FM Conway in 2000, 23 years ago. At that time, FM Conway had one depot, based in Penge, and had just purchased their Dartford depot. John Proctor takes up the story. HELPING LOCAL COMPANIES TO FLOURISH “In 2000, we were a two-person operation, with just myself working as an electrician, and an apprentice electrician. We fitted out the workshop, garages and offices at Dartford and then slowly our work with FM Conway expanded. At one stage, during the Illuminated River works, we employed six people and 18 local subcontract electricians. Pictures and details of the work we carried out were added to our website and we began to get leads for other specialist lighting works.” “We are proud of the work we carried out, and I have thoroughly enjoyed working with FM Conway over the past 23 years and consider them a fantastic partner to work with.”
